Configure a customer to report cost by tier and alerts by location

Some customers may have two or more locations and need to report costs for all locations but check capacity at each location and send alerts if the capacity at a location exceeds user-defined thresholds.  To do this, the customer is onboarded in using the standard onboarding process but there are some additional steps that need to be performed.

Creating the workbook

Workbooks are created as described in the section Creating a workbook.  However, for any services that need to have their costs reported by tier and check capacity by location, you must copy the same service sheet to the new workbook twice, and rename the second worksheet to include the text _Location.  For example, you might copy the _3PAR sheet twice and rename the second one _3PAR_Location.  Then, edit the sheets so that the primary sheet (i.e. _3PAR) sets the Location to a "hard-coded" value, such as the customer name, and the location sheet (i.e. _3PAR_Location) sets the Location to the actual location for the equipment.  This means the same data will be published twice, but you will configure the services and rate plans so the customer is only charged once for the usage.

The _3PAR sheet requires additional configuration when setting it up to report by tier or location.  If reporting by tier, enable the step named Aggregate Rows - Tier Only and delete the default Aggregate Rows step.  If reporting by location, delete the step named Aggregate Rows - Tier Only.

Creating the services

Services are created as described in the section Creating services.  However, there will be two sets of services, one set for the services reporting by tier and one set for the services reporting by location.  For example, you may have a service 00000-3PAR-FC-1200 for the tier and two services 00000-3PAR-LOCATION1-FC-1200 and 00000-3PAR-LOCATION2-FC-1200 for the locations.  These services will be nearly identical except that the dimension filters for the services will be different.  The Location dimension filter for the tier service will be the "hard-coded" value set in the tier service in the workbook, and the Location dimension filter in the location services will be the actual locations.

Creating the rate plans

Rate plans are created as described in the section Creating rate plans.  However, there will be two sets of rate plans, one set for the services reporting by tier and one set for the services reporting by location.  The rate plans for services reporting by tier will have:

  • Rate plan title - must contain the text (TIER ONLY).  For example, 00000-CustomerName (TIER ONLY)
  • Rate plan description - should have a user friendly description, since this is what will be displayed on the report.  For example,  Customer Name
  • This rate plan should have the actual rates for the services

And the rate plans for services reporting by location will have:

  • Rate plan title - must contain the text (LOCATION ONLY).  For example, 00000-CustomerName-Location1 (LOCATION ONLY)
  • Rate plan description - should have a user friendly description, since this is what will be displayed on the report.  For example,  Customer Name - Location1
  • These rate plans should have all rates SET TO ZERO, since you don't want to charge the customer twice for the services

Creating the customer records

Customer records are created as described in the section Creating customers.  However, there will be different types of customer records:

  • The main customer record, with the just the 5 levels of the account structure specified (no location).  This record will use the Default rate plan.
  • The tier level customer record, with 6 levels of the account structure specified.  The location field in the account structure will be the "hard-coded" location as specified in the Location dimension filter in the tier service.  The rate plan will be set to the one that has the name that includes (TIER ONLY).
  • The location level customer records, with 6 levels of the account structure specified.  The location fields in the account structure will be the actual locations as specified in the Location dimension filters in the location services.  The rate plans will be set to the ones that has the name that includes (LOCATION ONLY).
