Data collection and processing

Cloud Cruiser gathers usage, metering, and chargeback data from systems in a cloud environment by using automated processing routines known as collectors. Collectors are scripted jobs that communicate with data resources in a cloud and retrieve and process usage detail in accordance with billing rules defined by the customer.

A typical production environment will generally require several different collectors to gather consumption data. For example, one collector might gather data from a hypervisor management platform; a second collector could retrieve data from a storage array; and a third collector could collect data from a software license management platform. Additional collectors could be deployed to pull data from flat files such as spreadsheets, reports, and so on.

Once metering data has been collected, it can be manipulated in a step-by-step fashion by a series of processing stages defined in the collection scripts. The purpose of the processing steps is to manipulate and transform the collected data to both prepare the data for loading into Cloud Cruiser, and also in order to affect a customer’s billing rules.

Cloud Cruiser ships with numerous out-of-the-box collection routines that support a variety of popular sources of data in a cloud environment. It is possible to extend Cloud Cruiser’s functionality by developing custom collectors.
