Managing rates

Managing rates is the third step in metered service configuration, after setting service options and configuring resources.  This topic shows you how to view and configure rates, using 3PAR for illustration purposes.

Viewing and managing rates

This section will show you how to select a meter, then view and manage its rates settings.

Selecting a meter

The Meters column in the left hand panel of the Manage rates page shows all possible meters for the selected service.  Each meter represents a line item on the Monthly Charges report for the customer. A yellow warning icon is shown next to any meters that don’t have rate information entered.  The first meter in the list is selected by default.

To select a meter

  • Click the desired row in the Meters column.

In the right hand panel, the rates settings are grouped into Meter Attributes, Capacities, and Rates.  Meter Attributes apply to all date revisions for the selected meter.  Settings for capacities and rates are managed with separate revision dates.

As an HPE GreenLake channel partner, you only need to update the Rates table for the selected meter.  The meter attributes and capacities are modifiable only by HPE, and are shown here for your information, to help you answer customer questions. They should look familiar from your contract.

On the Step 3 of 3 - Manage rates page of the service configuration wizard, manage rates as shown in the following steps.

Viewing and updating meter attributes

Settings that apply to all date revisions for the selected meter are shown in the Meter Attributes section of the page. These include the description for the selected meter, the pricing model, the maximum shrinkage amount, and the selector for rounding usage to the nearest integer.

Choosing the pricing model and max shrink value

The Pricing Model setting determines how the usage for a given date will be priced:

  • If you select the Absolute pricing model, all usage will be charged the unit price for the final usage tier reached on that date.
  • If you select the Marginal pricing model, the usage that falls into each tier will be charged the unit price for that tier.

For example, assuming two tiers of: >= 0 to <= 5.0 and: > 5.0,  actual usage of 7 GB will be priced as follows:

  • Absolute: all 7 GB will be charged at the second tier price
  • Marginal: 5 GB will be charged at the first tier price, and 2 GB will be charged at the second tier price

Committed capacity is the contractually-agreed level of consumption for this meter.  Depending on the billing plan, the minimum commitment amount can grow and/or shrink over time as usage changes.  For plans that allow shrinkage, the Max Shrink setting determines the minimum committed capacity.

Max shrink is set to 100% for all HPE GreenLake provisioned services, unless otherwise explicitly specified in the contract.

If usage exceeds committed capacity in a billing period, the consumed amount becomes the new committed capacity, starting with the current billing period.  In the next billing period, if all of the new committed capacity isn't used, the committed capacity will automatically be adjusted down, toward the original value.  However, any reduction is gradual, based on the maximum invoiced amount for the past three months and the max shrink setting.

To edit meter attributes for the selected meter

  1. Enter a Description for the meter.
  2. Choose the appropriate Pricing Model (either Absolute or Marginal) from the selection list.
  3. Use the + icon or - icon in the Max Shrink field to define the minimum committed capacity.
  4. Select the Round Usage box if the meter's usage should be rounded to the nearest integer.

Viewing and updating capacities

Capacity settings for the selected meter are shown in the Capacities section of the page.  These settings are typically revised together, fairly often (e.g., from end-of-month processing), and include requested capacity, committed percent, committed capacity, and minimum contractual commitment.

To enter or edit capacities for the selected meter

  1. Click the + icon to create a new revision (or click the pencil icon in the desired row to edit an existing revision).
This will display an overlay for entering capacity data for the meter.
  2. Enter the Start Date for the revision (or click the calendar icon, then the  + icon or - icon to adjust it).
  3. Enter the Requested Capacity (or click the + icon or - icon to adjust it).
  4. Enter the Committed Percent (%) (or click the + icon or - icon to adjust it).
The Committed Capacity will be calculated automatically based on the Requested Capacity multiplied by the Committed Percent (%).
  5. If necessary, override the Committed Capacity value by selecting the Override box and entering a custom value.
  6. Click OK to save your entries.

If you make changes to the settings in an existing revision and click OK without entering a new date, you will see a warning:

    GLBM_serv_config_figa_change_config_warning.png

(This warning is intended to stop you from accidentally changing rates later on, so you can ignore it if you're entering rates the first time for a customer.)

If you're not sure your changes are correct,  click Previous - Configure resources. and continue to back out of the service configuration wizard until the Unsaved Changes overlay displays, then click OK to exit without saving, and begin again.

To copy an existing capacities revision for the selected meter

  1. Click the copy icon in the desired row
  2. Modify the copied revision as needed

To delete an existing capacities revision for the selected meter

Click the trash can icon in the desired row

You will not be prompted to confirm before the row is deleted.

Viewing and updating rate bands

Each entry in the Rates table represents the rates charged for the selected meter's consumption during a particular date range.

In most cases, the table contains just one date range. For each price band in each date range, you must enter the markup or direct rate that you are charging the reseller or customer downstream of you in this particular contract.  You can choose to charge the same for each pricing band, or vary your markup to create incentives.

If you are a reseller who is purchasing HPE GreenLake services through a distributor, and Rate Per Unit shows ‘Not available’, this means that the distributor has not yet entered their pricing. Once the distributor enters their markup or direct rate, you'll be able to see what they charge you.  In the meantime, enter your own pricing.

As an HPE GreenLake Channel Partner, you only need to enter your pricing for the selected meter.

  2. Click the Saved button or the X to close the overlay and return to the Services summary page.

When a service configuration is saved, the charge job will run for that service automatically within 20 minutes.  Check Processing to verify the status.

When the charge job completes, the Monthly Charges report in the GLBM will show the charges for that service based on the configuration just entered.

The next step in customer configuration is assigning an ASM to the customer.
